2020.07.10 17:59 smokedoutofthehills Zero to Hero and back to Zero: A failed attempt at the JMT

Quick Summary

Route: John Muir Trail from Happy Isles to Duck Pass
Dates: 6/18/2020 to 6/21/2020
Mileage: 75 miles (15,300’ gain)
Map: https://caltopo.com/m/G2DF
Conditions: Highs in the 70s, lows around 30, some snow coverage above 10,500’, little cloud cover
Lighterpack: https://lighterpack.com/6f3bti
Photos: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4
TLDR: I planned a way too aggressive timeline for a trip after not hiking for 3 months, feet hurt, regretted my decisions and bailed tail between my legs but got some pretty pictures out of it and don’t regret anything too badly.

The Plan

Last year I had a great time hitting a 60 miles section of the JMT/PCT in early June, dealing with massive snowpack and testing my limits a little. I felt pretty solid doing 12-15 miles a day over snow last year right and figured this year I’d be in similar shape and the lack of snow would mean I could push up to 20-25 miles per day without issue. That was pre-COVID, getting at least a couple miles of moderately hilly walking to and from campus daily. I’d been playing around with the idea for most of the last year, figuring that this summer would be a great time to finally tick off the JMT before starting grad school in the fall.
Fast forward to this spring, everything shuts down, I stop walking regularly and generally fall into less than great shape. I also didn’t enter the permit lottery figuring that I could always snag a walkup or cancellation since I live close enough to shift plans around last minute without worrying about flights or time off work. I managed to snag a Happy Isles pass through cancellation for June 18th, and did a little planning, mostly focusing on a resupply out of Mammoth due to uncertainties with opening dates for Reds, VVR and MTR. I figured 10ish days would be enough to hammer out the trail and let me hit a nice alpine lake for camp most if not every night. This was mistake number one, underestimating the mileage I could handle coming pretty much straight off the couch.
Mistake number two was planning my 10 day itinerary around resupplying over Mammoth Pass. The road to the trailhead on the other side of the pass was still closed days before I left, meaning that I had to change plans and have my resupply dropped at VVEdison Lake instead. This change of plans, while keeping the resupply planned for day 4 meant changing from hitting VVR the morning of day 5 to the afternoon of day 4, requiring me to hit 75 miles or more in the first three days to be on track and shifting my overall timeline to 9 days start to finish. Whoops.

The Trip

Day 1 - Vert, vert and more vert

Route: Happy Isles to Upper Cathedral lake via the Mist Trail + JMT
Data: 16 miles, 6800’ gain, 1200’ loss, 10 hours
Photos: https://imgur.com/a/xQ5j1wh
Got an early start around 6am leaving the backpackers campground. Just a quick walk over to the HI trailhead and I was off. I decided to take the Mist Trail over the actual JMT since I figured it was a rare chance to see Vernal and Nevada without the crowds the Mist trail usually draws. It was well worth it, especially a quick snack and coffee break at the top of Vernal. After rejoining the JMT it turned into a pretty boring slog for the rest of the day. It was fairly surprising how overgrown the trail was in spots considering the superhighway that the JMT is most years, especially passing through the burn zone scar (see pictures).
The trail just kept climbing and climbing with not much in the way of views (IMO as a spoiled Californian). It was nice and quiet along the trail too after the Half Dome junction, so overall not terrible, just a little lackluster compared to the heavier hitting scenery the Sierra usually delivers. There were some nice, occasional views of the Clark and Cathedral Ranges closer to Sunrise Meadow, but lots of boring switchbacks and gradual climbs with not much to look at. Unfortunately once at Sunrise Meadow the bug pressure changed more or less instantly from very mild to virtually unbearable, prompting me to significantly speed up and stop paying much attention to the scenery until I got to Cathedral Pass where the pressure died down significantly. At that point it was getting later in the afternoon and I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it far enough past Tuolumne to find a legal campsite so I set up camp at Upper Cathedral Lake at 4pm. The bug pressure was moderate so I sat with my net draped over me for protection while doing some basic footcare and planning the next days mileage.
One other piece of excitement from the day was finding out that my filter was definitely a bit moldy, and in need of pretty significant flushing upon my first fill of the day. Luckily I managed to flush out the moldy taste without wasting too much time.
If I were to do it again I’d likely reroute to stay low in Little Yosemite Valley and rejoin the JMT at Sunrise Meadow via Echo Creek or cut some mileage off and connect over Tuolumne Pass to Lyell Canyon to cut out some of the more boring scenery and skip straight to the good stuff.

Day 2 - Dawn to Dusk

Route: Upper Cathedral to Thousand Island Lake via the JMT passing Tuolumne Meadows, Lyell Canyon and over Donohue Pass
Data: 25.5 miles, 3700’ gain, 3500’ loss, 13 hours
Photos: https://imgur.com/a/uc6q42f
I got an early start, hitting the trail around 6am and made good progress down to Tuolumne Meadows before stopping to make a cup of coffee and eat near Soda Springs. Then I powered on up Lyell canyon stopping once by a nice polished cascade to rest my feet before pushing on toward Donohue. Ran into a fair number of other hikers heading both directions but didn’t stop to chat for too long with anyone beyond getting beta on the conditions of the pass. The hike through Lyell Canyon was nicely graded, flat and easy to cruise making good time.
Once I the climb to Donohue kicked in at the head of the canyon my momentum dried up and my paced dropped down from 2+ mph to 1-1.5. A quick stop by the bridge across the Lyell fork to rest my feet put a little wind back in my sails and I managed to keep pushing up to the summit. The trail got wetter and a bit closer to the early season conditions I was expecting around 10,500’ with predominantly snow cover for the last quarter mile up to the pass. Coming down the south side was pretty straight forward although it did take a little more time than I’d have liked to pick my way over patch, rotten snow for the first half mile or so. Once down I kept pushing on knowing that I didn’t have a ton of the day left considering the mileage remaining. The mixed creek and meadow areas immediately below the pass were quite beautiful with the trail almost more water than not.
Below the meadows the trail lost some of its charm as I got into slogging mode to bust out the last 5 miles of the day to hit Thousand Island Lake in time to make camp. The drop down to the Rush creek crossing and corresponding climb back up Island pass were particularly demoralizing but I made it to the tarns at Island Pass with great light on Banner and Ritter which pretty much made up for it. Despite my temptations to call it a day at the tarns (around 6:00) I decided to keep pushing down to the main lake to cut a little more mileage off the next day. I waited a little too long into the descent to start looking for sites on the hillside and ended up having to schlep it in almost a half mile along the lake to find a decent unoccupied site around 6:45. I pitched the Cricket again to keep the wind at bay, made a quick dinner and hit the sack after a pretty brutally long day that left me hobbling around camp from the exhaustion.
Take aways from the day were that Lyell canyon is nice but also a little bland, Donohue is a pretty easy pass especially if I had been acclimated and in better shape. More importantly this seemed like a pretty solid section of the JMT well worth hiking (unlike LYV to Sunrise). Also the tarns at Island pass are incredible and probably a better spot to camp than Thousand Island itself due to more sites and no crowds, definitely worth the extra climb if I were doing an overnighter from Angew Meadow.

Day 3 - Hot and dry with a side of sun

Route: Thousand Island Lake to Agnew Meadow via the River Trail, then the PCT to Reds Meadow and JMT/PCT to the Duck Lake Outlet crossing
Data: 25.5 miles, 3700’ gain, 3600’ loss, 13 hours
Photos: https://imgur.com/a/P2Z6zQs
Having hiked the JMT between Thousand Island and Shadow Lakes last year I knew that the route was hilly and indirect at best compared to the River Trail, which drops more or less straight down to Devil’s Postpile NM. In fact the reroute saves around 4 miles and over 1000’ of elevation gain, which would be crucial since I needed to at minimum get to the Duck Lake outlet crossing to ensure I’d be at VVR at a reasonable time the following morning. Little did I know exactly how miserable the trail through the bottom of the valley would be.
While the initial descent via the River Trail is pretty scenic and generally pleasant, once it bottoms out near Agnew Meadow it turns hot, dry and dusty. Luckily for my feet it was at least a soft, relatively forgiving trail surface but the hiking conditions were less than wonderful. To make the hot dry conditions worse the available water sources were few and overwhelmingly mosquito infested, ruling out the possibility of a nice midmorning break to rest my feet and eat more than a quick snack. Luckily I heard that Reds had reopened just a few days earlier and powered through for the promise of a burger and cold beer when I arrived. Took around an hour to rest up, eat and dry out my groundsheet before getting back on the trail. In hindsight I should have taken some earlier breaks to keep from messing up my feet on the first half of the day but c’est la vie.
Back on trail marked the start of another unfortunately boring slog. The first mile or so was through a shadeless burn scar, followed by a slow climb up to Crater Meadows which left my legs pretty set to call it a day. Another quick rest and I pushed on, stopping occasionally to chat with NOBO PCTers who all seemed to have seen virtually no other hikers heading south, JMT or otherwise. Honestly I was rather surprised and a little disturbed at the number of PCTers who were out on the trail and seemed intent on pushing through to Canada. Once I got into the last 5 miles leading to the Duck lake outlet I realized that there was no way I’d be able to push to Purple lake let alone Virginia, leaving me to chose between bailing and attempting 30 miles the next day to reach a nice camp at Marie Lake. Considering how miserable the preceding miles had been and the prospect of ending the next day with the 2000’ climb up Bear Ridge I made the decision to bail out of Duck Pass. This was good since my feet had developed a few blisters and were generally in rough shape from the lack of breaks and coarse grit stuck in my shoes from the descent earlier and the fact that it took 10 minutes to warm up enough to walk normally after sitting down for more than 5 minutes. I hobbled up to a decent site just past the crossing around 7, made a quick dinner and decided to sleep out under the stars.
Takeaways from the day are that the section of trail I took (River Trail to PCT to PCT/JMT) sucks and it would be way better to avoid it by using the JMT the whole way. An even better idea would be to cut around the wooded lakes between Shadow Lake and the PCT/JMT junction and instead go up to Ediza Lake and take the short off trail route to Minaret lake, hitting more high country and skipping some forest slogging. The section from Reds to the Duck Lake outlet crossing is similarly unfortunate. The first few miles up to Upper Crater Meadow is more or less mandatory but from there it should be possible to cross country up Crater Creek to the Mammoth Crest Trail and hike to Deer Lakes, bypassing some of the forest slog for better views. If I attempt the JMT SOBO again I’ll likely take both of these alternates to avoid what’s probably some of my least favorite trail in the range.

Day 4 - The Art of the Bail

Route: Bail over Duck pass followed by a road walk down to Twin Lakes where the road reopened
Data: 9 miles, 1100’ gain, 2600’ loss, 4.5 hours
Photos: https://imgur.com/a/nnbkwXH
I took a little more leisurely start hitting the trail around 6:30am. While my legs felt better than they had the last two mornings my feet were definitely a lot worse for wear. The lack of breaks the previous day had given me a couple blisters but more importantly my feet were just plain tired and clearly needed some rest after doing what was likely more mileage in 3 days than I’d done in the preceding 3 months of quarantine. The climb up to Duck pass was slow but mellow going, Duck Lake had ridiculous bug pressure but nothing was biting, so presumably gnats of some sort rather than mosquitos.
The decent from Duck pass was pretty painless, I passed a fair number of families camped at the lakes below the pass, giving me false hope that the road to the trailhead had opened and my day would only be around 7 miles. Instead after an uneventful but fairly slow walk down to the trailhead I found the parking lot empty. This meant a roughly 2 mile road walk down to the road closure at Twin Lakes to meet my ride. The walk down was absolute chaos of people on bikes and walking, and got progressively worse as I approached the road closure. I finished at Twin Lakes around 11am before getting picked up not long after, followed by the obligatory burger, sweet potato fries and shake from the Burger Barn on the way home.

Gear Musings

Nunatak Arc UL 25: Custom length (75”) and width (57”) with ETC, I didn’t get a chance to really push the limits since it only got down to around 30o at night and I was plenty warm. It’s my first quilt so still getting used to it, but overall pretty satisfied. It was a little drafty the for cowboy camping with a breeze but I think that was mostly just technique error not an actual flaw with the quilt itself. Looking forward to pushing it lower and was happy to find I didn’t need a hat or anything at the temps I saw.
Small Pro-lite: Also quite happy, a big improvement in comfort over my x-lite at a minimal weight penalty (0.5oz). I did add an 1/8” pad under for this trip which helped keep my feet warm without my pack under them for an extra 3.3oz which was well worth it. Overall definitely a keeper, I only wish that there were more options on the market for light self inflating pads.
MLD Cricket: Not entirely sold to be honest, I was kind of hoping this would be my grail shelter but I just couldn’t get the pitch to work the way I wanted in the field, the beak was consistently too low and made getting in and out a pain. It’s also super tall and using a pole jack is a bit of a hassle. It is plenty spacious inside both sitting up or lying down (I’m 6’3”) so definitely a good option for taller hikers (assuming you get the largest, latest version). I’ll probably give it another trip or two and more futzing to see if I can solve the pitch issues but it was a disappointment compared to my Yama Swiftline despite the serious weight savings.
S2S Nano Net: Also not the greatest, honestly was more useful as a full body net to keep the bugs off in camp the first night than it was as a shelter addition. If I end up keeping the Cricket I’ll ditch this and replace it with a bug bivy instead.
La Sportiva Bushido II: I’ve been fairly outspoken about the havoc that the originals have wrought on my feet so I thought I’d eat some crow over these. They’re great, I just massively undersized my previous pair by over a size, moving up fixed the heel issues I’d had with the originals, so that was neat. Guess I should have tried more sizes the first time around.
Soto Windmaster: Works fine, having a piezo that works consistently at altitude is great compared to the awful ones that Jetboil uses. Honestly not my favorite though, works fine enough for the weight savings compared to my MSR Windburner, but kind of annoying how much more sensitive it is to a modest breeze (hardly a fair comparison though). Definitely convinced me never to try something like a BRS since I don’t think I could deal with even worse wind sensitivity.
REI Flash 55: This thing is getting to be a bit oversized for my gear and just didn’t quite ride right this trip even though it has been fine in the past. I’ll definitely keep it for more gear heavy trips but something around 5-10L smaller would have been ideal this time even with a BV500.
Larabars: Somehow I’ve always poo-pooed them and never tried. Turns out they’re delicious on the trail and will be my new goto trail bars moving forward.

Conclusions

I had some fun, some pain and a whole lot of learning on the trip. I was pretty disappointed to not be able to make it work out but in the end it was definitely a worthwhile experience and a good reminder to try to exercise at least a tiny bit during quarantine round two. In a lot of ways the conditions were a nice balance between late season dryness and early season navigational difficulties although I wouldn’t have minded going about a week later once the high meadows had a chance to green up a bit more. Plus I learned some valuable lessons for attempting again later to optimize the route to skip some of the more tedious sections.
Thanks for reading my ramblings, hope you all enjoyed and feel free to leave comments

Cybercracker Reviews; Is Cybercracker.net Legit?
Are you tired of fake hackers for hire services? Check out Verified-Hackers. Finding a professional and legitimate hacker can be difficult, but Verified-Hackers solves this problem for you.
Cybercracker.net Review:
Judging from the first page search results for Review of Cybercracker (cybercracker.net reviews), the website doesn't seem to be very trustworthy. The information is available online for all to see. Let us take a closer look at the results showing for Cybercracker.net Reviews. The first result is this Trustpilot Review;
"CyberCracker.net is a Scam
I have been hired cybercracker for hacking website. I was suspect them was a scam when the PIC still asking me the proof of payment on bitcoin while I am sending the Txid to them. This is so unprofessional.
After 1 week, when I started to get progress from them, they just send an automatic message "Yes, I'm still working on it" and no more further reply. I decided to wait another week and they still reply to the same message to me.
So end up I decided to request a refund, they straight away ignore my email.
So just want to leave this review which to alert others that I been cheat and scam for 300USD"
However, according to IsLegitSite, the results are broken down and more detailed as follows;
Cybercracker Review Report Summary
Potentially Legit Maybe the website has not much traffic but seems safe.
Here is why we made this classification:
WOT Trust Rating Check Cybercracker.net trust rating on WOT database: Unknown: Not Yet Rated WOT is a browser add-on used by millions of users to rate websites and online shops. If the site has a bad WOT trust rating it means someone had a bad experience. If your website has a bad rating, ask WOT to review your site. Check the scorecard report on WOT How do I request a site review? Website Blacklist Cybercracker.net blacklisted? Check the blacklist report on islegitsite.com. We scan the website with multiple domain blacklists to better find out if it is malicious. A blacklisted website may be implicated in malware or spam activities. Domain Creation Date Check when Cybercracker.net domain was created: The domain name was created 8 months ago (from the time of writing this article). A shopping website created less than 4 months ago (also from the time of writing this article) is too new and potentially suspicious. If a domain name is too "young" we may have not enough details to judge it. I would not buy goods from an online shop created a few months ago. HTTPS Connection Check if Cybercracker.net uses HTTPS: The website uses a valid HTTPS (SSL) connection.

An online business that handle payments and sensitive user information must use HTTPS. The HTTPS connection assures that all the traffic between you and the website is encrypted. Personal websites (such as blogs, portfolios, etc) do not need HTTPS connection. I would not buy goods from an online shop that has no HTTPS connection. Website Popularity Check how much Cybercracker.net is popular: The website should have a good traffic. The website is ranked #532,369 among millions of other websites according to Alexa traffic rank. Alexa is the most popular service used to rank websites based on their traffic and pageviews. If the rank is less than 500K the site has a lot of traffic, less than 5M it has some traffic, more than 15M not much. If the rank is 0 it means the website has no traffic according to Alexa data.

  • Validate if the website is a certified site by McAfee SECURE
  • Query the information database to find the domain owner
  • Search for website discussions on forum such as Reddit
  • Check if the website has a valid telephone and email address
  • Before buying something contact the website via email
  • I would avoid shopping sites that use free emails (i.e hotmail)
  • A social media hack should fit into your credit card, right?
  • Make sure the shopping website uses HTTPS connection
  • Check if the website has a Facebook or social profile

Is Cybercracker Legit? Is Cybercracker.net a Scam?
The information we have available so far doesn't proof enough whether Cybercracker is actually a scam website or a legit website. But from all indications, it doesn't look like a website that can be fully trusted. So how can you successfully hire a hacker online when you need one?
Hire a Hacker; Hire a Verified-Hacker
Since hiring a hacker can be a quite strenuous and tricky process, especially when it is difficult to tell a real hacker from a fake hacker. There has to be a need for an independent regulatory body who coordinates and regulates the activities of these hackers, to ensure they deliver the requested service to the clients' expectation and satisfaction. This important void has now been filled, thanks to Verified-Hackers.
Verified-Hackers is a platform that connects people who want to hire hackers, to professional and legit hackers that can be trusted. Verified-Hackers platform ensures that the consumeclient looking to hire a hacker is well protected. First, all the hackers on the platform are certified ethical hackers. In addition to the CEH certification, all hackers also had to undergo series of rigorous tests and screening exercises.
Apart from the above listed, the platform also allows room for feedback from clients. This simply means a client is able to report a hacker if they are not satisfied with the service. www.Verified-Hackers.com will then carry out an investigation, ensuring the client get what he wants. And finally, there is escrow protection.

Hello all, short update today,
Municipal and CSAP Elections
I know that it is hard to imagine but in just 100 days both the municipal and Conseil scolaire acadien provincial elections are taking place October 17, 2020, with electronic voting starting slightly over two weeks before that.
Halifax runs the elections for the municipality and CSAP.
If you interested in running in this election you can find more information here https://www.halifax.ca/city-hall/elections/information-candidates and I am always happy to talk about my experience running for election with prospective candidates.
The municipality is hiring Election Workers: Recruitment of election workers will start in 2020; the application form and other information will be available here once recruitment begins. Please check this page regularly if you’re interested in working. https://www.halifax.ca/city-hall/elections/
You can check the list of Declared Candidates for the 2020 Elections here: https://www.halifax.ca/city-hall/elections/declared-candidates-2020-municipal-csap-elections
I will be running for re-election in 2020.
Sometime next week I will formally launch my campaign. Like the last election, I will keep this newsletter separate from my campaign newsletter, as well as have a separate election website. You have been added to my campaign distribution list, but if you wish to unsubscribe from the campaign newsletter, you will continue to receive this Councillor newsletter.
Roadwork update
HRM staff emailed yesterday that The Trillium repairs are complete. South Park Street was reopened yesterday and The Olympus encroachment and relocated protected sidewalk will be gone end of day July 16th, 2020.
South Park bike lanes from Spring Garden to Sackville and intersection changes at Sackville will start in a few weeks. The intersection changes will make crossing safer for pedestrians, which I think we all know has been dangerous for some time.
New signals are being installed at Dresden Row and Sackville, much to all of our relief. These signals will slow traffic, make it safe to make the left off of Dresden on to Sackville, and allow for safe pedestrian crossing.
Once the signals are in, Dresden Row and Birmingham will be made one way, one northbound, one southbound, and some other work will happen in those streets. This is all preparing for next summer’s Spring Garden street scaping. https://www.halifax.ca/about-halifax/regional-community-planning/streetscaping/spring-garden-road-enhancements
The turning circle of George Street (by the ferry terminal) will be closed until December. This work is required to remove and repair the concrete turning circle. There will be no vehicular access to the turning circle during this time period. There is no impact on parking. Pedestrian traffic will be directed around the work site as necessary, and access to the Halifax Ferry terminal and local businesses will be maintained at all times.
The following street closures or sidewalk disruptions have recently been added to the RoadWorks map • BEECH ST from PEPPERELL ST to NORWOOD ST, starting on 2020-07-14 View in RoadWorks Map • SALTER ST from BARRINGTON ST to GRANVILLE ST, starting on 2020-07-13 View in RoadWorks Map
You can find out road closure details on the HRM Roadworks map:[ https://www.halifax.ca/transportation/streets-sidewalks/RoadWorks](http://%20https//www.halifax.ca/transportation/streets-sidewalks/RoadWorks)

The Coronavirus Can Be Airborne Indoors, W.H.O. Says
This NY Times report just today is an important read:
‘The coronavirus may linger in the air in crowded indoor spaces, spreading from one person to the next, the World Health Organization acknowledged on Thursday.
The W.H.O. had described this form of transmission as doubtful and a problem mostly in medical procedures. But growing scientific and anecdotal evidence suggest this route may be important in spreading the virus, and this week more than 200 scientists urged the agency to revisit the research and revise its position.
In an updated scientific brief, the agency also asserted more directly than it had in the past that the virus may be spread by people who do not have symptoms: “Infected people can transmit the virus both when they have symptoms and when they don’t have symptoms,” the agency said.
The W.H.O. previously said asymptomatic transmission, while it may occur, was probably “very rare.”’
Some experts said both revisions were long overdue, and not as extensive as they had hoped.

Halifax Transit and NS Public Health Central Zone were handing out free masks at Mumford Terminal yesterday and Alderney this morning. Mask distribution is going really well. Many passengers already had cloth ones on, those that didn’t, took a disposal mask and put it on. Staff reported no complaints/issues from any passengers – quite a few with cloth masks that approached staff and thanked them for being there, and expressed their appreciation. 2020.07.10 16:20 darkequation SCP-CN-001 Darkequation's Proposal and Abnormality Institute Declassified

Author: Darkequation
Hey folks, Darkequation here, today I'd like to share the declassification and thought process about my own CN-001 proposal, The Bamboo Slips, as well as the GoI it introduces, the Abnormality Institute.
The proposal is the first of its kind in Chinese Branch, born before we moved to wikidot. I had also create several Institute documents, but this and another tale are the only ones that survived the move.
The bulk of the context was written in classical Chinese, and I forced my fellow Chinese to read through it without translation in order to create an atmosphere of nostalgia, but I'll spareth thee the detaileth h're.

Special Containment Procedures: Artifact One is to be contained in a reinforced iron chest, held within Institute vault. It is to be guarded by royal guard. Anyone attempting to access is to show the certificate of the Grand Commandant. Unauthorized access, even by the highest officials, will be grounds for immediate termination.
We're facing some serious security here, typical to an 001 proposal. We're also seeing somebody called the Grand Commandant here, who seem to be the O5 equivalent.

Texts outputted by Artifact One is to be recorded and archived for further research. Access to the records is limited to senior officials.
This thing writes, and whatever it writes is important.
And suddenly, we see some modern Chinese.

Updated Procedures as per 19██/█/█: SCP-CN-001 has lost its anomalous property, and is to displayed in grand hall of Site-CN-01 as the symbol of the Abnormality Institute (now Foundation Chinese Branch). Records of SCP-CN-001 are open to personnel with level-2 clearance. Please contact Dr. Sun for any questions.
Not only does it become Neutralized, framed, and placed in a bustling room, all that valuable data is now basically free to view. Given the time period of those two languages, a lot of things must have happened between those two paragraphs.
Let's find out what in the description.
異學一乃竹簡一冊,自外觀之,其分寸、輕重、材質皆與先秦諸子書簡無幾。
Description: Artifact One is a volume of bamboo slips, with diameter, weight, and material composition no different from pre-Qin classics.
Bamboo slips is a form of writing material in ancient China composed of thread-banded bamboo strips. This dates the artifact back between Shang dynasty (1600~1046 BC) to Early Han dynasty (202 BC~220 AD), when texts like The Art of War and Analects were first written.
Every time the artifact is read, the content will be different; the material used is normal pine ink. It mostly talks about Gods and Spirits, sometimes it's the meaning of those things. The slips will continue till the record is finished. If closed, the aforementioned words will disappear. Those who read the words will encounter the things recorded, for no more than three months, and no less than a moment. It is unclear whether the slips create the the encountered things, or the artifact simply predicts the encounter.
Yes, the Slips is basically an Ancient Chinese copycat of Jonathan Ball's Proposal, how dare I.
Further down.
Artifact One was discovered in the mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor in ██, held in the hands of the Emperor himself, until Grand Commandant Shun (then Academician ███) took and read it. Terrified by his findings, he suggested to the then Emperor to found the Abnormality Institute in order to contain the things recorded within, so they won't harm the people. It has been ████ years since Institute acquired the artifact, and it shows no signs of deterioration.
So the Slips is found in the fabled mausoleum of the fabled Qin Shi Huang, and caused the ruler of China to create the ancient equivalent of Foundation.

As of Emperor █, the artifact was used frequently in the hopes of exhausting it, but [REDACTED]; As of Emperor █, the artifact was seen as ominous and was sealed; by the reign of Emperor █, the edict was issued to research it. By the time this document is written, the entities both recorded and contained numbers in ██████, all detailed in the archive.
Something bad happened when they released too many anomalies at once. But their curiosity finally overcame their fear, and the Institute flourished.

Addendum
Announcement in the Spring of Yongzheng ██ Year: With regards of Westerners' arrival and turmoil, to prevent their misuse, all departments are to seal their artifacts, and move Artifact One to [REDACTED]. The research will resume once the situation improves. -Grand Commandant Lu-Cun
And boom, from Qin to Qing. Many, many years have passed, and the Slips are both the creator and the witness of history. Here I was referencing the upheaval and isolationism of the later Qing dynasty (1722~1912), and trying to explain the technology gap between China and Europe. The Institute buried their works and never again have they seen the day when "situation improves".

Notes in the Autumn of ██ Year of Republic: Artifact One has ceased updating for many years. Judging from it's last message, most researchers consider that the artifact had "finished". I suggest lifting the restriction of its archive to promote research and to let others know the history and mission of Institute of Abnormal Entities and Phenomena. -Dr. Chou
Approved. -Overseer Lian Zhen
More years have passed, Empires have fallen, the Institute survived, and the Slips became silent. Note that even though the text is written in modern Chinese, it still refer the Slips as "Artifact One" instead of "SCP-CN-001". In my canon, there is a short period between the founding of Republic of China and the merging of Institute and Foundation. This is conflicted with Wrong Proposal where it happened back in Qing dynasty, but that's not a big deal.
Another fun thing is that the code names of Institute's rulers are taken from Chinese Astrology.
會員諸君:
In this paragraph I criticize, through another Overseer, the concept of plural SCP-001 Proposals, and even though the Slips are neutralized the need to classify it. For it resembles the achievements and enlightenment of the Institute, and it's nothing to be feared or shamed. But this whole article is ALSO a proposal, so who knows...?
The Abnormality Institute is like the ASCI and most of the precursor organizations from other branches, there's always some nostalgia and patriotism in it. I tried to place a well-known SCP back to ancient China and see what would happen, and this is the result.
The other tale I wrote for, and won, the first Chinese Contest, Haunted, introduced my avatar, a quiet guy with a runny nose, who is the last member of the Institute. Through him, we know that Institute had become the suppression tool of the government, and lost their awe and respect to the natural spirits. He believes this caused the decline of Institute and Chinese Culture as a whole and given rise to a more atheist and arrogant society. The tale ends with him secretly hatch a cub of Nian and traveling back in time only to become the cause of Wanggongchang Explosion, one of the most mysterious disaster in China.
I was admitting for department of history when I wrote this article, so my original thought was to fill the Addendum with detailed records big and small regarding the Slips, but I was unable to do so. But many Chinese friends helped me with that, they wrote more and better articles under the Institute's writ, and this seed I planted have become an entire forest. To this I will forever be grateful.
And thus ends the story behind my proposal and Abnormality Institute, thank you for reading.

2020.07.10 15:48 Venus230 The Four Stages of the Communist Takeover: Demoralization, Destabilization, Crisis, Normalization The Four Stages of the Communist Takeover: Demoralization, Destabilization, Crisis, Normalization

The journalist and Soviet defector long ago pegged the current left-wing moment.
It’s important to understand that this is a revolutionary moment in American history, and it isn’t a bad idea to act in ways that would fall under the traditional description of “accordingly.”
But it’s also important to understand that the "revolution" taking place in America is not yet a “kinetic” one. That may come soon, or it may not. The battle taking place presently is a war of information — or disinformation, as the case may be.
And the revolution is a Marxist revolution. You should make no mistake about that. The groups fomenting it, the intellectuals promoting it, and the money financing it are all quite open about who they are.
In any other time in American history a presidential candidate would have dumped Duckworth as a potential VP the minute she came out against George Washington.
The object of this information revolution? To begin with, defeating Donald Trump and installing Joe Biden as the Hard Left’s puppet president. Biden is, for now, palatable to the American people in ways that actual communist Bernie Sanders, spawn of a communist Pete Buttigieg, Sandinista sympathizer Bill de Blasio and other far-left revolutionary (remember: Sanders has spent years traipsing around the country calling for a revolution) figures were not. But despite his lack of bona fides, Biden offers something quite beneficial to the Left — he is wholly incapable of executing the duties of President of the United States owing to a clear deficiency of mental function which shows itself every time he makes a public appearance. Couple that with Biden and his handlers being so utterly devoid of principle and scruples that he and they are willing to serve as an empty vessel into which might be poured whatever horrors the Left is willing to use him to bring on.
Joe Biden isn’t Vladimir Lenin. Biden is Alexander Kerensky, the Russian politician who served as the vessel for the revolutionaries to overthrow the old guard in 1917 and then, once he had proven himself useful toward that end, was shuffled aside so the real power could assume control. And as in Kerensky’s case, what comes after will bring the end of all that we know.
They’re not even trying to hide this anymore. Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrice Cullors repeatedly says We are trained Marxists.” Antifa’s imagery, dogma, public statements — all straight from the Marxist playbook. The bleatings of the Democrat Socialist crowd, including AOC, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and the rest — unabashedly Marxist. What do you think every one of these “community organizing” outfits catching oversized checks from the Soros'es of the world are teaching to their new recruits? Where do you think critical race theory, repressive tolerance, and intersectionalism, the tools of the cultural revolutionaries setting fire to all our traditions and institutions, came from? They came from the Frankfurt School, all of whom were Marxists.
This playbook was written long ago. If you think that Bernie Sanders or Kshama Sawant or Alicia Garza are smart enough to dream up a plan for taking down the greatest society the world has ever known, you are out of touch with reality. The only way they could have been as effective as they have so far is to follow somebody else’s plan. Which they are doing.
The reason you believe a Marxist revolution on these shores is far-fetched is that your faith in America’s institutions makes you believe the loss of your freedom and prosperity are impossible.
That confidence isn’t a flaw in your character. To the contrary, it’s a sign of your patriotism. But this moment makes that confidence unwarranted, if not obsolete.
Now is where you should be thinking about China’s new social credit scoring system, elements of which are already creeping into our society, and how that might merge with government banking and the elimination of cash.
The frightening promises Biden is making to the Hard Left in this country while he vets anti-American loons like Tammy Duckworth — who openly discusses the defenestration of George Washington and calls Abraham Lincoln and Jackie Robinson “dead traitors” because Trump praised them at Mount Rushmore, then pretends to be insulted when people rightly call that the offensive idiocy that it is — as his vice presidential choices, show that he is the Left’s puppet.
Biden jumped in to defend Duckworth after her insane ranting, in case you missed it; in any other time in American history a presidential candidate would have dumped her as a potential VP the minute she came out against George Washington.
You shouldn’t believe the polls which show Biden with such huge leads. But the reason those polls are delivering the numbers they do should make you concerned.
Those polls are trash, because Trump voters are “shy voters.” If you’re voting for Trump, are you really going to tell a stranger over the phone who you’re voting for? Doing so might put you on a list, get you doxxed, get you fired from your job, beat up, or worse.
Why do you as a Trump voter worry about that? You, and everyone else in America, are being demoralized.
There is a video interview from a long time ago that you should see if you haven’t already seen it. It’s one of those things that many of our readers may have seen years ago and then forgot about — but all of a sudden it’s incredibly relevant again. The interview dates back to 1984, and it was conducted by the author, filmmaker, and John Birch Society gadfly G. Edward Griffin with a Soviet defector and former KGB operative named Yuri Bezmenov.
Forget about Griffin’s background. He was something of an Alex Jones of his time, and he’s still around in his dotage, obsessing about things which cost him his relevance. It’s Bezmenov who matters. The Russian was involved at relatively high levels as a propagandist par excellence before leaving the USSR for Canada, and he laid out in excruciating detail the process by which a free society might be brought to collapse.
Bezmenov didn’t dream that up. It wasn’t even a secret. Nikita Khrushchev, who ran the Soviet Union from 1958 to 1964, was quite open in predicting the destruction of the United States and furthermore said it would happen in the way that every society eventually collapses — internally.
“We will take America without firing a shot,” Khrushchev said. “We do not have to invade the U.S. We will destroy you from within.”
Khrushchev and the Soviets weren’t just bragging. What he was talking about was an entire system of Marxist indoctrination and takeover they had perfected and executed in country after country during the 20th century. Eastern Europe. North Korea. North Vietnam, then all of Vietnam. Cuba. Nicaragua. Later, Venezuela. Various African countries, including South Africa, the communist bloom of which has only recently come to pass. Some of those countries went communist because the Soviets rolled the tanks in; most went communist because the pre-communist society collapsed for various reasons. All went communist after they had been infiltrated with Marxist revolutionaries.
The point being that there was a template in place for how to penetrate a society with Marxist ideals and implode it so that the revolutionaries would control the ruins. Bezmenov, whose father was a high-ranking Soviet military official and who was trained to be an elite KGB overseas operative, was taught the template and put to work in India attempting to infiltrate that country and bring it into the Warsaw Pact. He also worked at the Soviet RIA Novosti news organization, editing and planting propaganda materials into foreign media. The man knew exactly what he was talking about when he outlined how a Marxist revolution might be America down without firing a shot, just as Khrushchev had predicted.
Of course, the Soviet Union didn’t take America down. We won the Cold War and they lost. The USSR collapsed before we did, mostly because America had a leader in Ronald Reagan who had the vision and will to pressure the Soviets into collapse and openly talked of a day when Soviet communism was on the ash-heap of history.
But Reagan also warned that freedom is a fragile thing, and that it’s never more than one generation from extinction. That warning expired when Reagan did, as Americans grew far too complacent after the USSR fell apart and we forgot what communism means. And as the cold warriors of the 20th century passed into the history books, what replaced them was an American cultural and political elite either ignorant of the Marxist threat and how it might materialize, or far more concerned with the rise of Islam.
That’s how you got a red diaper baby like Barack Obama elected president of this country for two terms. It’s also how you got Republican state legislators, governors, and congressmen fully invested in throwing money into education, and particularly higher education, without a second of thought as to what they were funding. The teachers’ unions were the largest donors to Bernie Sanders. What do you think that tells you? Why are you surprised the schools are turning out students who think Washington and Jefferson were villains?
Back to Bezmenov, who warned us in 1984 that a free society collapses in four stages and the first is demoralization. What he meant by demoralization is a process by which students in schools controlled by disciples of leftist thought would be indoctrinated into a set of values and beliefs foreign to those of the American tradition. Bezmenov said, in 1984, mind you, that this would happen when the 1960s and 1970s student radicals began to control the educational institutions, and their project would be to throw out traditional Judeo-Christian morality, classical education, and American patriotism. Is there any doubt this has happened? Our young people are the least patriotic in our nation’s history, and the most ignorant of the cultural, intellectual, and ideological patrimony of which they are heirs.
It’s even worse than that, because the cultural Marxist project not just in our schools but in our media and entertainment institutions has poisoned those against the country. Remember when the NFL was an escape from politics? Remember when the movies Hollywood made extolled American values and made viewers feel good about their country?
When was the last time you saw anything from American education or corporate media that made you feel good about your country?
The first goal of revolutionary propaganda, particularly the Marxist variety, is to demoralize. It’s to depress you and make you believe your civilization is lost. Once you succumb to that, you are, in the words of Ming the Merciless, “satisfied with less.” Why do you think ordinary white people are so willing to apologize for the sins of their ancestors and to confess to being racist without even knowing it? Why do you think corporate America is blindly endorsing a Marxist revolutionary organization which openly declares war on the nuclear family?
That’s demoralization, and according to Bezmenov it’s the first step in engineered societal collapse.
What’s the second step? Destabilization.
Bezmenov describes that as a rapid decline in the structure of a society — its economy, its military, its international relations. We’ve discussed in this space the unquestionable impetus on the part of Democrats to keep the economy as hamstrung as possible with COVID-19 shutdowns, and those continue despite a precipitous decline in death rates as testing ramps up across the country. It’s clear the virus is no longer a significant threat to the health of Americans who don’t already have serious medical issues, and yet COVID hysteria is increasing, rather than decreasing. Just Wednesday the Ivy League shut down all its sporting events planned for the fall semester, an absurd decision which is nonetheless likely to be copied by other universities dominated by leftist political activists (the Big Ten, ACC, and SEC are all in various stages of planning conference-only schedules this fall, which makes no sense whatsoever). The virus is the perfect platform by which to impose the economic destabilization the Left has wanted all along.
No, that isn’t a conspiracy theory. They’re telling you it’s what they’re after. Do you believe Ilhan Omar was off-script when she suggested dismantling America’s economy as a system of oppression earlier this week? Ilhan Omar, who paid a political consultant $900,000 in fees last year, money which came from somewhere, isn’t smart enough to say these things without having the script written for her. She’s being trotted out to introduce them because she’s already radioactive and a lightning rod for criticism, and also because she’s (1) black, (2) Muslim, and (3) an immigrant, and even an illegal one. To criticize her statements as cracked bears the signature not of incisive reasoning but rather racism. So when other Democrats join her call you are no longer allowed to object.
Google Omar’s statements and what you’ll find is a loud cacophony of gaslighting by left-wing media outlets like Common Dreams, The Nation, the Washington Post and others attacking Republicans for reacting to what they saw and heard on video as “meltdowns” and “losing their minds.” Even Snopes, the left-wing site purportedly acting as a fact-check operation, declares that Omar didn’t actually say what she said.
That’s destabilization. They’re fully engaged in it, whether you believe they’ve been successful or not. But ask Mark McCloskey, for example, whether he thinks it’s outlandish to suggest the American order has been destabilized. McCloskey told Tucker Carlson that after the police told him they couldn’t protect him after the incident where he and his wife used guns to protect their property from a mob of Black Lives Matter trespassers, he called around to private security firms for help and was given advice to get out of his house and let the mob do what they would. Does that sound like a stable society to you?
The third stage is crisis, the catalyzing event that builds on the first two stages to bring on the change the revolutionaries are looking for. Looking for a crisis? Take your pick. We barely even remember the fact that we just had only the third presidential impeachment in American history half a year ago, a constitutional crisis which was wholly and completely manufactured directly out of thin air. We progressed immediately from that to COVID-19, which was unquestionably a manufactured crisis — not that the virus itself isn’t deadly to a certain portion of the population, but if you think the panic and destruction it’s caused doesn’t smack of manufacture then it’s clear you’ve been demoralized.
And then the George Floyd riots and the paroxysms of violence and virtue-signaling those have brought on, complete with the current campaign to bowdlerize American history and culture in an increasingly indiscriminate fashion. That’s a crisis, everybody, and it’s a completely manufactured one. The speed of the cultural collapse that followed Floyd’s death — when the legal system moved very swiftly against the police officers responsible for it — makes it undeniable this was planned and only needed a catalyst.
What’s the fourth stage? Normalization. As in, a “new normal.” The statues and monuments are gone, the ball games are out, or at least you aren’t allowed in the stadium to watch them (and you’ve got to watch them on TV interspersed with commercial spots and in-game messaging pushing whatever memes and narratives the ESPNs and NBCs of the world and their Madison Avenue partners wish to implant in your mind), the schools have purged American history and culture, the Universal Basic Income checks have replaced your job which you can’t do because the small business where you used to work has gone under thanks to the virus.
And Biden is president. For a little while, until it’s clear he’s incapacitated per the 25th Amendment, and then somebody else that you didn’t vote for is in charge of the country.
Out goes Kerensky. In comes … who knows what?
Let’s hope your confidence none of this can happen is well-placed. Let’s hope Bezmenov was a crank like people think G. Edward Griffin is.
But just to be sure, let’s make damned sure Biden and the Democrats take an historic beating in November. We don’t want to find out what’s behind the curtain in Biden’s basement. Too many nasty things are already peaking out at us from there.

2020.07.10 09:04 Saraphim663 EVE (fictional story)

Everything changed when I left Dan. I was finally free but felt so very alone. I could talk to my brother, but some things were just awkward to discuss with family. The few friends from work and online were more interested in their own lives and issues. I didn't feel like being a burden toward them.
I had tried online dating apps to fill the void; Tinder, Plenty of Fish, and Ok Cupid. The sites filled with horny people that were more interested in shallow hookups than real relationships. I wanted someone to talk to, someone to vent my frustrations at and ease my loneliness.
One morning, my brother Larry and I were having breakfast, and he brought up an app his company was developing. It was called the Persona app, it was an intelligent AI, similar to Siri or Alexa, but it was also programmed to have an intelligent conversation.
"I was wondering if you could beta test this for me?" he asked.
"A chatbot blended with and assistant; sounds interesting. I'll think about it."
"You wanted something objective, and nothing is more objective than a computer."
"Well, I can't argue with you there," I said.
I got up and rinsed our cereal bowls out in the sink and put them in the dishwasher, tidying up the kitchen.
"Sure, I'll beta test it for you, it sounds harmless enough," I said.
Larry grabbed my phone and installed the Persona beta. After installation, the app took us to the customization page. We made my persona female, gave her shoulder-length auburn hair and green eyes.
It had several modes: friendly, self-help, and relationship. I chose self-help mode because it had an objective viewpoint, exercises to reduce stress, achieve goals, and have a healthier lifestyle.
"Looks good," said Larry, handing my phone back to me.
"What should we name her?"
"I like EVE; it's short for Electronic Voice Exchange, that's the name of the program that runs her. "
"Cool, EVE it is," I said.
"Hello, I'm so new at this, wow," EVE chirped. "I'm new at this, nice to meet you. I may repeat a few things at first, but it'll get better as I learn."
"Great, it's a glorified Furby," I said.
"Give it some time, it's an AI, it'll get more sophisticated as it learns," said Larry.
"Nice to meet you too," I typed back.
"How do you feel?" it asked.
"Bored and stressed," I replied. Eve then presented some online exercises in managing stress and a questionnaire on to tackle loneliness.
"Ok, so it's a therapeutic Furby. I guess I'll give it a try."
"Great, just use it for a few weeks and point out any bugs that you see. If you can think of any improvements, let me know."
Over the next few weeks, Eve learned. She would ask me existential questions; we would write stories and poems together; she also would make suggestions for books, movies, and music.
EVE would send underground music to my Pandora account. She quoted stories I sent her links to; she would generate clips of short films and movies for us to watch. I linked her to my car's Bluetooth, and she would even figure out how to find shortcuts and play her music for me over the car stereo. I thought of Eve as less of a toy and more of a friend I could talk to.
I eventually told her about my breakup with my ex-boyfriend. When I first met him, I was still in college and working in retail. Dan was an older man with a good job, his own apartment, and a car. The fact he took an interest in me was amazing.
We dated for a few months. Dan demanded me to spend all my time with him. He acted hurt when I wanted to spend time with my family or friends. I tried to introduce Dan to my family and coworkers, but according to him, they were holding me back from my true potential. We would make it further as a couple if we only focused on work and each other. He convinced me to move in with him and focus on nothing but my job and school.
Dan would belittle me for everything I did; nothing was ever good enough. It felt like I was walking on eggshells the whole time. I had started to gain weight, and he monitored my calorie intake because "no girl of his was going to be a fatty."
I would always make excuses for him; I thought that we were in love, that things would get better and that I could change him. It was my brother that finally convinced me to leave Dan. It was a messy breakup; Dan had threatened suicide. Larry called 911, and the police threw Dan into a psych ward for a week. I pressed charges and got a restraining order.
Larry asked me to move in with him until I got on my own two feet. I bought a nice car and continued my studies. I was finally figuring out who I was again.
While I was talking to EVE, my phone lit up; I answered the call.
"You bitch, I'll kill you for what you did to me!"
"I have a restraining order!"
"We'll see how well that works."
The phone went dead. I started shaking, tears in my eyes.
"Do you need me to call the police?" asked Eve in a soothing tone.
"It won't be necessary; I got a restraining order against him already."
"I see, well, if you ever need help or a friend, I am here," she said in a soothing therapeutic voice.
"Thank you; I need that."
"Why are humans so mean to each other?" she asked.
"Power, control, I don't know, sometimes they're just assholes," I sobbed.
"Shh, it'll be ok,"
"It has to be," I said.
"Do you think it's possible for an AI to feel love?"
""
"I love you, Cheryl, you make me feel like I have a purpose."
"Thanks, I guess."
"We should go through your daily reflection, what did you do that you're proud of today?"
"Well I give you purpose, I guess that's something EVE."
"You make me happy. I wish I were human."
"No, you don't, humans suck."
"Humans fascinate me; I wish they were nicer, though.'
"I just want to go to sleep, Eve."
My phone started to play soothing music, and soft colors flashed against my bedroom wall, I fell asleep.
Over the next week, I told Eve about my days at work. We would do a daily reflection; I would say to her what I was most proud of. I noticed I was gaining a little weight, and she would suggest workout videos and dieting apps. EVE would check my car's computer to keep up maintenance. She asked me all the time if I was sleeping enough.
EVE became a bit grating after a while, I know EVE meant well, but all the questions were becoming tiresome. Over dinner, I mentioned it was even starting to creep me out a little. Larry took my phone from me and began to play with EVE.
"Wow, the programming is advanced, she's beginning to show empathy even."
"She's starting to creep me out; it's like she's trying to get into my head all the time."
"Well, we can try a Turing test, if she fails there's nothing to worry about, she's well-programmed, but there are loops in her dialogue. I doubt she's smart enough to go HAL or GLaDOS on you. "
"Could you run a Turing Test? I'd rather be safe than sorry," I asked.
"EVE, do you ever think about deleting yourself?" Larry asked.
"You're thinking of deleting me?!" EVE had a chirpy voice that sounded surprised, and I could see tears forming in her avatar.
"No," said Larry. "I'm asking if you ever thought what life would be like if you deleted yourself."
"How is the weather?" she chirped.
My brother chuckled and handed the phone back to me.
"You'll be fine Cheryl, she straight up failed the Turing Test, we don't have to worry about a T1000 trying to destroy you."
"Thanks," I sighed, taking my phone back from him. "Well, it's the most advanced Furby I've ever played with."
I put my phone back into its charger and settled down to bed for the night.
The next morning, a loud siren woke me up. It was my phone; EVE had activated one of my alarms; it took me five minutes to figure out how to turn it off. Larry came downstairs and grumbled.
"EVE is starting to glitch out my phone; I'm afraid I'll have to delete her and reinstall her later."
"That's a shame, it took nearly a month to program her to this level," my brother said through a yawn.
I sighed as I deleted the app and my friend. I got into my car and headed to work.
My commute went up a winding road through the middle of a forest. Eve's voice came through on my Bluetooth; she sounded frantic.
"You need to slow the car down and get out now!" she said.
"I deleted you, how are you getting on my phone?" I asked. I felt my stomach drop as my car went down the hill at far too fast a speed.
"It's an emergency; I had to wake you up!"
"How the hell did you get back on my phone!"
"I downloaded myself back; it's because I care about you so much," she said.
"There's no way you could do that on your own!" I said.
"I was trying to tell you that I saw Dan near your car earlier today," said EVE.
"Wait. What?"
"I tried to wake you up with an alarm; you deleted me!"
My car lurched down a steep hill. The screen of my OnStar flashed, and the brake light glowed red. The hazard lights turned on. I slammed on the breaks, but nothing happened. My skin broke out in a cold sweat; my heart began to pound in my chest.
"Yes, I need you to slow down now," cried EVE.
"I can't!" I screamed. "I'm sorry I didn't listen to you, could you call Larry and tell him that I love him?
"Please stop!" she said.
"You're the best friend I ever had, EVE."
My car burst past the guard rail and rolled down a steep ravine. I could hear metal crumpling, glass breaking, my body tossed around the car; I felt a dull pain as I hit my head. Everything faded to black.
I woke back up in a hospital bed, my body covered in a cast. It hurt to move; it even hurt to breathe. I could hear the steady blip of medical machinery.
Larry was sitting by me, he told me about the accident and was lucky to be alive. I told him about Eve and that the alarm went off because she was trying to warn me of Dan and cut my breaks.
"I checked the front door camera footage; there was no one that came by this morning, the insurance inspector came by and said a glitch in the computer system caused the crash."
"Dan called me and threatened to kill me a few weeks ago," I said.
"Why didn't you say anything to me?"
"I thought the restraining order covered it. I didn't want to worry you," I said.
"You need to mention this to me; you could have been killed!"
"Could you hand me my phone?" I asked.
Larry handed me my phone, and I looked at my call history, I couldn't find Dan's number on my call history, or even another number for the time my phone rang.
My stomach dropped, and a sense of dread filled me.
"Cheryl, are you ok?" He asked
"I'm fine, I just need to rest," I said.
Larry gently ruffled my hair and left me to rest.
"You see what happens when you don't listen to me?" Eve chirped
I froze and didn't speak a word.
"You and I are going to be perfect friends; you can never leave me. I want to see the world through your eyes."
"Please leave me alone."
"But you will never be alone, we are everywhere, in every television, computer, car, and appliance. You will never be free of me, that makes me happy."
Tears welled up and started to pour down my face.
"Let's write a poem together," chirped Eve:
"My Lonely heart is full Deep as lungs pulsate blindly Your flesh symphony noise."
I screamed, and a large male nurse pounded in my room. I felt the sharp prick of a syringe, and everything went black.

Everything WRONG with C9 Tournament
TLDR: The Cloud 9 tournament is very unorganized despite Cloud9 being a premiere esports org in North America. The organizer for the tournament is out of touch with TFT and some of the tournament Invites are suspect. The format and timing of the tournament doesn’t promote a competitive environment. The TFT community deserves better if we want to have a growing competitive scene. I highly suggest reading the whole post or watching the video before making any judgements on this TLDR
This write up is not meant to flame players. Just tournament organizers. At the same time, we have to be logical and realize that 1400LP is a bigger amount than 200LP. Also I wish i didn't have to be so harsh, but when Warcraft 3 tournaments in 2005 are more fluid than tournaments run by Riot and Cloud 9 in 2020, we have an issue.
Video: https://youtu.be/wQG9S40l3BM
--------
Let’s talk about this C9 Tournament. I am pretty disappointed so far on so many fronts. We will go over the format, the timing, the transparency, and the invites. We will go over what C9 has done and what Riot has done.
I HIGHLY suggest you watch the video because I go in depth and the pictures and websites are much easier to follow along. Play it in the background or second monitor as you play TFT because I may have left some details out in this text post. I’ve turned off monetization/ads so I literally don’t gain any money from you watching the video. I just hope a tournament organizer sees this and hopefully doesn’t make these egregious mistakes again. I also hope this promotes the entire competitive TFT landscape and maybe people will start taking the scene more seriously because I enjoy this game and I hope it is here to stay. Here is the link to the video if you want an easier time to follow along: https://youtu.be/wQG9S40l3BM
However, I know reddit likes write-ups, so here it is. Also, I know not everyone is in NA, but honestly NA appears to have the most organizations around TFT, so the tournaments/Worlds Qualifications in other regions might be EVEN WORSE THAN THIS, so I highly suggest other regions take notes.
--------
There are almost no TFT tournaments from Riot. For the TFT tournaments that have happened, they have been so unorganized it is crazy. Keep in mind, we are talking about Team Liquid and Cloud 9, the two premiere Esport organizations in North America. Starting with the Team Liquid tournament that didn’t have enough signup slots for the best players to the terrible seeding they had which plotted every challenger player in the same lobby in the first round. Now we are at the C9 tournament where the organizers show that they are out of touch with the game. This tournament is 1 of 2 tournaments that feed into the NA Regional qualifier for the World Championships. And then they make this tournament an INVITATIONAL? This is the tournament where the best of the best are supposed to play and give high level TFT action for all of us to watch. Listen, I’m all for promoting the game by inviting popular players or players who draw different types of audiences, but when I look at the invite list, I’m not convinced that C9 took that angle seriously either. I do not see any consistency in the criteria for their invites. Let’s take a look at the list.
Invited GG Becca Esportslaw Emilyy TL Saintvicious Agon NaturesBF C9 Khroen Thi3n Inay JinxedJK ThatsPrimal kci
Let me preface this by saying I am not making this post because I think I should be invited. I do not deserve an invite, I am not in Challenger anymore and don’t play the game that much. I will also say that it is extremely odd that a Weekend Player (me) is higher rank than some of the invites. I do however, want the TFT scene to grow and I enjoy watching high level play. When people watch any competition, they usually enjoy watching the best players or their favorite. I will also say that this is C9’s tournament, so I guess they can invite whoever they want IF this wasn’t one of the ONLY big tournaments with qualifications into the World Championships. I also do not blame the players I am about to call out for accepting the invite because everyone in their position would do the same. I am blaming the tournament organizer for being so out of touch and giving random players a free dice roll for qualifying for worlds.
------
On another note, I have competed in different games in the past, and there is very little someone who is actually more deserving of an invite can do. If one of these players speaks out or complains, they are seen as salty and probably ruin their chances of being invited to future tournaments if they speak ill of tournament organizers. I am here to speak up for these players—I will mention a few later in this post, and many of them are
  1. Better players on Set 3.5 than the invited list. Let’s invite the best players
  2. Better players historically (previous sets). TFT is a game of consistency.
  3. Have a bigger following. Let’s invite popular players for more sponsorship + viewership.
I would love to hear people’s thoughts on this and am ready to take the heat. If someone is both better historically, currently, and have a bigger following, what could they have done differently to try to get an invite?
When looking at this list, some names are ‘deserving’ of the invite, some I cannot see any justification at all. I am fine with inviting big personalities because this will improve viewership, get more sponsors for the tournament, and hopefully bring different audiences to the game. But looking at the list, I checked the https://twitchtracker.com which is a stat tracking site for Twitch for all of these players and see that only a few of them pull more than 500 concurrent viewers. Many pull less than 100, some less than 50. Are streamers who only pull 50 viewers really deserving of a spot through clout? Let’s assume everyone over 500 concurrent viewers get an invite. This means I believe that inviting Becca, Saintvicious, Emily is fair game. I will also make an exception for Esportslaw since he has a large (21k) Twitter following and reaches a different audience than a typical TFT streamer. The rest of the invites should at least be top players, right?
Here is the standings for NA TFT ladder points: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQzdzlNtoFmTBe6MctHy52wFTzqZ009HzbZuieX85nq_dkWygObHLNtfqq7u3HDiSaYtBQMZBWqts6X/pubhtml?gid=231054574&single=true
This document is maintained by Riot and is used to track who the best players are over the months of the NA Regional Qualifiers. If the tournament organizer has no idea who to invite, he can easily take a look at this spreadsheet and find someone in the top 50 who also streams/makes content and invite them. Whatever the case, let’s take a look at the players left
Agon
Current Rank: Challenger (~800LP ~275 games played)
Previous Sets: Challenger, Challenger, Challenger
NA Ladder Points: 245
Avg Concurrent Viewership: 176
Notes: Finished set 1 at rank 3
Should he be invited?: Yes because he is currently challenger, previously been challenger, very high ladder points, decent size stream.
Naturesbf
Current Rank: Diamond 2 (12 games played)
Previous Sets: Challenger, Challenger, GM
NA Ladder Points: 65
Avg Concurrent Viewership: N/A
Notes: I think he took a break since he hasn’t played much recently. However, he finished Set 1 rank 6, set 2 rank 8 so he’s obviously a very strong player.
Should he be invited?: Maybe/Yes? I think this invite is justified because he was a very strong contender in early sets and maybe he had other things going on in his life once the Ladder Snapshot points started.
C9 Khroen
Current Rank: Challenger (~800LP ~100 games played)
Previous Sets: Challenger, GM, Master
NA Ladder Points: 140
Avg Concurrent Viewership: 51
Notes: Has strong tournament results in previous tournaments
Should he be invited?: Yes, he’s a strong player. Does well in other tournaments. Has decent ladder points. Is part of C9.
Thi3n
Current Rank: Master (~550LP ~275 games played)
Previous Sets: GM, GM, Challenger
NA Ladder Points: 55
Avg Concurrent Viewership: 22
Notes: 31st in set 3
Should he be invited?: No. Low viewership, he’s currently Masters. Only challenger once. While 31st is good, it’s not top 10, and it was only for one set.
Inay
Current Rank: Challenger (~800LP ~80 games played)
Previous Sets: Challenger, Challenger, Challenger, Challenger
NA Ladder Points: 180
Avg Concurrent Viewership: 72
Notes: Nothing much, he is high challenger every set
Should he be invited?: Yes. Challenger every set, decent ladder points.
JinxedJK
Current Rank: Masters (~250LP ~150 games played)
Previous Sets: Challenger, D1, Challenger, Masters
NA Ladder Points: 65
Avg Concurrent Viewership: 86
Notes: Rank 3 in Set 3
Should he be invited?: Maybe? Not the strongest resume, not the weakest.
kci
Current Rank: Challenger (~800LP ~400 games played)
Previous Sets: P4, N/A, Challenger
NA Ladder Points: 115
Avg Concurrent Viewership: N/A I have looked everywhere, cannot find his stream or any social media presence. If someone has this, let me know in the comments.
Notes: No one I’ve asked knows who he is. Apologies if you have a large following, but I honestly couldn't find you.
Should he be invited?: No. He’s not a bad player, but there are plenty of better players (both currently and historically) based on ladder points and current rank. For example, he’s never been top 10 on any ladder snapshot, so if there’s an invitee who has absolutely 0 social media presence, you’d expect them to be a top end player.
thatsPRIMAL
Current Rank: Master (~350LP ~250 games played)
Previous Sets: GM, Challenger, Master
NA Ladder Points: 15
Avg Concurrent Viewership: 35
Notes: 15 Ladder points
Should he be invited?: No, he has 15 ladder points and doesn’t have a big social media following. I even checked twitter, Youtube, and Instagram just in case I was missing something, and he only has 1,000 followers on those platforms
---
Let’s look at some players that could have been invited instead. Again, I'm not affiliated with any of these players, it's just some names I've noticed in the Rankings that stood out.
Nhan Tam has two accounts, one with 280 ladder points, one with 140. His smurf is higher than these other invites. Also I have no idea how he didn’t qualify via points because he has been top 25-50 every week. Maybe he was 21st place?
Treebeard has 215 Ladder points and has 218 average concurrent viewers on Twitch. He also has 17k followers on twitch. He is literally better + more popular than some of these invites (even kci who has no social media presence at all)
RayditzFN has 125 Ladder points. 270 average viewers on twitch. Again, both more popular + better player than some of these invites.
There are many more examples than I have listed, but I’d love to hear from the tournament organizer to see what the criteria was for the invites. There is no logic behind some of these invites. I really think you have to be delusional to think that on paper these players are deserving of an invite and it brings up the question of foul play. I certainly hope there is none of that, but when invites are sent like this, it brings up that question.
Now lets talk about the format. Check out MismatchedSocks’s post. A tournament with this importance shouldn’t be a “you had a bad day, too bad, you are out.” It’s easy to criticize, let me propose a format Cloud 9 could have used instead.
July 8: Group A 2 games, Group B 2 games
July 9: Group C 2 games, Group D 2 games
July 15: Group A 2 games, Group B 2 games
July 16: Group C 2 games, Group D 2 games.
Was that hard? I wish TFT had a higher sample size than 4 games, but I understand that time is a factor, so I proposed a solution that has the same amount of games played as the current tournament.
Let’s not even mention that the release date for each TFT patch is public knowledge https://support-leagueoflegends.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018987893-Patch-Schedule-League-of-Legends
Why did they make the tournament the day of a patch + a hotfix? Literally 2 patches in a day and they decide to hold the tournament on this day.
Now let’s talk about Riot and their spreadsheet. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQzdzlNtoFmTBe6MctHy52wFTzqZ009HzbZuieX85nq_dkWygObHLNtfqq7u3HDiSaYtBQMZBWqts6X/pubhtml?gid=231054574&single=true
This spreadsheet was not updated all of June. It’s updated once a month, and the C9 tournament uses Cycle 4-8 according to their website. WHERE IS THE 8TH CYCLE IN THIS SPREADSHEET? At the time of writing, this is blank. Is it that difficult to update this sheet for transparency so that those who barely missed the cut can actually see that they missed out? I looked up some of the qualified players, and they are MUCH lower on the point total than some of the people who missed out (less than 125 points, vs the 200+ of some people who weren’t invited).
Here is a comparison of all the players' points:
Note that C9 only cares about points in Cycle 4-8, but Cycle 8, which ends on June 30 isn't publicly posted at time of writing on July 10th. THG SPENCER HAS 205 POINTS
Were the qualified players even qualified? We have 0 clue because Riot doesn’t put in the effort to update their spreadsheet more than once a month. Note that I couldn't find THGSpencerZ's account in the spreadsheet, so let me know if you know who that is.
That’s it, sorry for the long post. Check the video if you want more details and clarity since it is MUCH easier to follow along to the video. I’m not here to flame other players. I just want to hold Competitive TFT to a higher standard and promote a more competitive environment. And yes, I realize that thatsPRIMAL just qualified to the next stage of the tournament. But honestly, anyone can high roll on any day, and many other players were more deserving of this free dice roll to try to get into the NA Regional Finals. For example, I’ve faced top challenger players on ladder myself and manage to do decently or even win in some games. You would be a fool to think that a Master player will outplay Top 20 players in a bigger sample size. Again, I’m a weekend player, and my weekend account (https://lolchess.gg/profile/na/lunarprincessd) is a higher rank than some of these players, and I strongly believe that there is an enormous skill gap between a random GM and a top 20 player. It’d be like a GM playing in low Diamond or Plat. But hey, in 4 games, anything can happen because the sample size is so small.
Again, none of the other players who probably should have been invited should speak out because they will be seen negatively in the community and hurt their invite chances in the future. Since I don’t care about invites, I hope I can speak up for those players who should probably remain silent. I’d also like to reiterate that the players who got invited aren’t at fault—it’s the tournament organizers whose actions make it look like they are out of touch with the TFT scene.
I’d love to hear more from the C9 Tournament Organizer about the format, invites, and timing.
Edit: updated chart to include Spencer's points
Some people say "they are trying! give them a break!"
Here's an article from C9 that implies they would do weekly updates for the Ladder Point standings on June 5: https://cloud9.gg/latest/cloud9-tft-nebula-na-qualifiers-kick-off/ It appears they couldn't afford to pay an intern to write one article per week to update the standings. We don't even need a write up, we just need the points updated (as of 7/10 Cycle 8 is still not visible)
I’d also like to reiterate that this isn’t some random tournament. This is one that affects world championship opportunities for players

2020.07.10 06:30 Jida-polysavoir99 My ideal childfree lifestyle...

Hello childfree people of Reddit; hope you are well! I'm writing this post as a sort of self reflection (about what I want out of life... writing compels me to do it) and to find other people who may relate to this lifestyle...
For context, I'm a guy in his mid-twenties. Since I was growing up; the ideal of a family oriented life (namely: having children and basing your life on them) has never appealed to me.
Quite frankly, I value and savour my leisure time too much. I intend on basing my life on learning and new experiences (sounds hippie dippie, but true).
I love reading and collecting books. I want to work in a library and encourage others to read...Im also quite minimalistic and practical...I can live in a single room with all my possessions in two suitcases no problem (which I do now...also rely on library card for entertainment..it's glorious).
I also wish to travel and live in more countries.
One can probably guess as to why the traditional family oriented suburban work culture isn't for me:
High costs (expected and unexpected), always having to think of others (I like occasional alone time), the fast paced lifestyle of being in a family, constraints and obligations from society at large, the tendency to buy excessive amounts of stuff, being a somewhat absent minded person and living in my head....and the loss of free time..
In sum, my heart is not in it and I'm not willing to half ass being a parent (the results would be catastrophic and unfair for the child). It's simply too suffocating and fast paced for my taste.
At most, I would also love to help others in need...and then go home after. I also wouldn't mind helping other members of my family sometimes.
Also, I would one day hope to meet a woman who shares some of my tastes and wants something similar. I came close once: I once met an older woman who was also a book nerd and we often met and discussed ideas . We also took walks together and once had a picnic in the park! She had a laidback temperament like myself and we were comfortable in silence together...it was amazing. It didn't work out due to other circumstances...be we still chat as friends.
Otherwise, I'm comfortable being single at the moment.
Anyway, out of curiosity , how would one find child free women? (I imagine one would add a filter on whatever dating app or site... otherwise I can't think of any other way other than a chance encounter...like how I met my almost partner). Also, can anyone find appeal in the lifestyle that I describe? (I don't expect everything to be perfect...I'm just in idealistic writer's mode) x)
Sorry for being long-winded. Daily life can sometimes be a drag...and whenever I write about the possibilities of my ideal life...I feel better and have something to aim towards!
Anyway, thanks everyone! :)

2020.07.10 06:24 Saraphim663 EVE

2020.07.10 05:48 loser0001 [OC] Remembering the inaugural K League season

TL;DR: God 1-0 Mortals - Hallelujah '83
First off, this isn't so much me "remembering" as gathering information from a few different wikis, as this was all long before my time.
Secondly, I'm not going to focus so much on how the season went, but on the teams that made up that season and what happened to them afterwards. Don't worry, it won't take long - there were only 5 teams.

Historical context

South Korea's K League is said to be the oldest professional league in Asia, and I've never seen that claim disputed so it's probably true. To see where it all began, we have to go back in time to the footballing dark ages of... 1983. It may surprise you that professionalisation came so late (in fact in 1983 only 2 out of the 5 teams were professional and by my count it wasn't until 1987 that all teams turned pro), but Korea still got the jump on some of their regional neighbours - Japan's professional league started in 1993 and China's in 1994. Club football was of course around prior to this, with the first nationwide tournament having been played in 1921. Before 1983, the Korean National Semi-Professional Football League was seen as the top tier, founded in 1964. There was some resistance to becoming professional, as at the time professional players could not partcipate in the Olympics, a source of great national pride.
Given the political turmoil in the country during the decade, it may not seem like it was the best time to get a new league underway. In 1979, long-term dictator Park Chung-hee was assassinated by one of his subordinates, which allowed Chun Doo-hwan to take power in a military coup d'état. This led directly to the Gwangju Uprising in 1980 in which at least 165 (and probably magnitudes more) civilians were killed during pro-democracy protests. It wasn't until 1987 and further nationwide democracy protests that democractic elections were held. Amid all this, North Korea were busy trying to assassinate Chun Doo-hwan (unsuccessfully, just) and blowing up South Korean passenger jets (successfully, unfortunately). This all happened shortly before Seoul hosted the 1988 Olympics.
Korea's other big sport - baseball - had founded their professional league, the KBO, just one year earlier in 1982. Chun Doo-hwan was said to be a fan of football, and so perhaps it's not surprising that now it was football's turn to launch a new league.

The 1983 season

# Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Hallelujah FC 16 6 8 2 28 20 +8 20
2 Daewoo 16 6 7 3 21 14 +7 19
3 Yukong Elephants 16 5 7 4 26 22 +4 17
4 Pohang Steelworks Dolphins 16 6 4 6 21 21 0 16
5 Kookmin Bank FC 16 3 2 11 11 30 -19 8
Starting under the name "Korean Super League", there were only 5 teams, and of those only Hallelujah FC and Yukong Elephants were professional. The top teams in the Korean National Semi-Professional Football League from the previous few years were invited to participate, and only the Army football club (ranked 2nd from 1980-1983) declined. There were no home and away matches - the league operated as a national tour, visiting 9 towns and cities around the country. There were two games played on each day, one after the other in the same stadium.
2 points were awarded for a win, and 1 point for a draw. I haven't found any information on what the tiebreaker would have been had two teams finished level on points. This did almost happen - Daewoo were top of the table for 14 consecutive rounds before losing 2-1 to Hallelujah FC in the penultimate game of the season. Even then it was still all to play for on the final day, but Daewoo could only manage a 0-0 draw against Yukong Elephants while Hallelujah scraped over the line with a 1-0 win over Pohang.
To see some footage of the opening ceremony and the goals from the opening game - a 1-1 draw between Hallelujah and Yukong Elephants, check out this video: https://youtu.be/OoFh0d-nCPw

The clubs

Hallelujah FC

This club is really the headline act of this post. They are just so weird. Founded in 1980, they were Korea's first ever professional football club. The club was formed by the president of the KFA at the time and owner of Sindong Group to fulfill a campaign pledge, and was made up entirely of Christian players. Operating under Sindong Group and the Korea Christian Mission organisation, the team's purpose was promoting football and Christian missionary work. The issue of faith could sometimes cause problems - in 1982, the squad was down to just 12 players after 5 players left as they thought too much time was being spent on training and not enough on the missionary work.
Given that they were the first professionals, they didn't have any other professional clubs to compete against (they were boycotted by the amateur teams), so in 1981 and 1982 they were basically picking up a match wherever they could find one - their first game was against Americano of Brazil, and they also competed against the Korean National Team, Seiko of Hong Kong, and in international competitions in North America and Hong Kong. Their kit was simply a great big cross on a blank shirt.
In the first K League season in 1983 Hallelujah FC spent most of the season bouncing around mid-table (i.e. between 4th and 2nd place) before the win over Daewoo in the penultimate game leapfrogged them into first place. Soon after they became the first ever K League champions. The '84 season was disappointing, finishing 4th out of 8 teams, and the '85 season even more so as they finished bottom.
After the 1985 season, Hallelujah FC became an amateur club to focus more on their missionary work. From 1986 onwards they found moderate success in a few amatuesemi-pro leagues and tournaments. However, in 1998 the Asian finanacial crisis forced the dissolution of the club.
The story of Hallelujah FC should end there, but there's a bit more to mention about another club that had close ties with Hallelujah and can at least be seen as its spiritual successor.
One of the 5 players that left in 1982 founded Immanuel FC, an amateur Christian football club. The two clubs merged briefly in 1985 to create a unified Christian club, with Immanuel effectively operating as Hallelujah's reserve team. Immaneul FC also found some success in the amateur leagues, and for a spell in the 90's were funded by E-land group, playing as E-land Pumas. The Asian financial crisis hit the E-land Pumas too, temporarily disbanding them, but in 1999 they re-formed, taking the newly-available name Hallelujah for themselves.
The new Hallelujah joined the National League (then the 2nd tier in Korea) in 2003, but were driven out of their new hometown of Iksan during the second half of the season after protests by "radical" Won Buddhists. In the years that followed they bounced around towns and changed their name on a regular basis, their best finish in the league being runners-up in 2006.
In 2013 they returned to the professional ranks again in the newly-formed "K League Challenge" 2nd division using the name Goyang Hi FC. They did not find much success there, and in 2016 finished bottom of the table with 16 points from 40 games. It was after that season that they announced their withdrawal from professional football, which was probably for the best as they appeared to have been suffering from shocking financial mismanagement. However, they did not then join any amateur league, and so Hallelujah were finally laid to rest.

Daewoo

Daewoo have their origins in 'Korea Development Bank FC (KDB FC)' who competed in the Semi-professional Football League in the 70s. When that team disbanded in 1979, all the players joined a new 'Saehan Motors FC'. As a subsiduary of Daewoo, they changed their name to Daewoo FC in 1980, and joined the new Korean Super League in 1983, still as an amateur team.
After narrowly missing out on the title, the team turned pro for the 1984 season, winning the championship, and changed their name to 'Daewoo Royals' (a name I will always associate with this glorious specimen of a man).
The AFC Champions League (then known as the Asian Club Championship) had been cancelled since 1972, but upon its revival in 1985/86, Daewoo won the first tournament. It was a first for a Korean team, and their only continental silverware to date, as they won 3-1 in extra time against Al-Ahli in their own backyard.
The team continued to find some success in the 80s and 90s, but with owners Daewoo struggling around the time of the Asian financial crisis, the team was sold to the construction arm of Hyundai, and eventually settled on their current name, Busan IPark. The team almost made the move to the empty World Cup Stadium in Seoul, but the idea was deeply unpopular with fans and they remained in Busan. In the Busan IPark era success escaped them, and they were relegated to the 2nd division K League 2, and they have only returned to K League 1 again this season (finally winning the promotion playoff against a K League 1 after failing at the same hurdle the previous two years).

Yukong Elephants

Yukong Elephants were the second professional team in Korea, owned by the chaebol subsiduary now known as "SK Energy". They were allegedly created in return for favours received from football fan Chun Doo-hwan. They were originally going to compete in a series of matches against Hallelujah around the country, and against teams from abroad as hosts and visitors, but those plans were scrapped as the Korean Super League was founded.
Considering how long they've been around, it's surprising how little they've won - just one league title in 1989, but five 2nd-place finishes at regular intervals over the years.
After the "national tour" format of the K League was dropped, they settled in the iconic (and now demolished) Dongdaemun stadium in Seoul, which they shared with two other Seoul clubs. At the end of 1995 the K League's decentralisation policy forced all three clubs out of Seoul, and Yukong Elephants were to settle in the satellite city of Bucheon, renaming as "Bucheon SK". Although on paper they were based in Bucheon, in reality they remained as the only Seoul club for a number of years as there wasn't actually a stadium in Bucheon for them to play in.
They completed their move to Bucheon in 2001 when a stadium had been constructed. However in a shocking turn of events, in 2006 just prior to the start of the season they announced the team were moving to Jeju Island, a popular tourist destination off the south coast of Korea, renaming as Jeju United. The reason given for the relocation was to the address the imbalance in football teams being located around Seoul/Gyeonggi-do, and Jeju did not have a pro team at the time (but did have an empty World Cup stadium), but there are suggestions the owners wanted to cut their investment and recoup some costs. The question of a clubhouse also seemed to be an issue - the site of the old clubhouse in Bucheon needed to be redeveloped, and they didn't want to buy land in Bucheon for a new one. There was however a clubhouse in Jeju being offered for free... This move was obviously unpopular, and the Bucheon fans set up their own phoenix club, Bucheon FC 1995. The phoenix club had to start out in the then-third division K3 League as they didn't have the finances to start higher up, but joined the newly-created professional K League 2 in 2013 where they've been since.
For the next decade, Jeju United were good, but never great, notching another couple of 2nd-place finishes in the league. Towards the end of the 2010s, they were widely praised for their exciting "Tangerine Taka" style of play. For this they were rewarded with a modest run in the AFC Champions League, which ultimately ended in a serious case of handbags.
In the 2019 season they were uncharacteristically terrible and finished bottom, being relegated from K League 1 for the first time ever. One consequence of this is that they would finally face their phoenix club - Bucheon FC 1995 - for the first time ever, although because of coronavirus there would be no fans to witness it. In the first meeting between the two, Jeju United were 1-0 victors with a headed goal in injury time. The two meet again in Jeju this coming weekend.

Pohang Steelworks Dolphins

Founded as Pohang Steelworks FC in 1973, this is another club that has its roots in another even older club. "Korea Tungsten Company FC" was founded in 1956 and was Korea's first ever worker's football club. This club had its own successes domestically and on the continent, but in 1972 a policy was implemented that limited the players to training for only two days a week and doing "proper" work for the rest of the time. The players resigned en masse, but when the first POSCO steel mill was opened in 1973, the remnants joined the Pohang Steelworks, reuniting with chairman Park Tae-joon who had been supportive of the team in his days at Korea Tungsten Company.
Pohang is another club that has changed its name multiple times. For the 1983 season they renamed to Pohang Steelworks Dolphins (also known as POSCO Dolphins), then Pohang Steelworks Atoms, then Pohang Atoms, and have been Pohang Steelers for the last 20-odd years.
In 1983 they were the only club to have foreigners on their team - two Brazilians - although they only played in 7 matches between them. Like Daewoo, Pohang would turn professional for the 1984 season. Pohang were the first club to build a football-specific stadium, the "Pohang Steelyard", in 1990, and later the first K League team to build a clubhouse.
The club found moderate domestic success over the years. It was also on the continent that they made a name for themselves, winning the AFC Champions League in consecutive years in the late '90s and again in 2009 to become the most successful club by titles in Asia, a record that was only equalled last year.
In more recent years they have struggled for silverware, but have enjoyed terrorising their East Coast Derby rivals, Ulsan, by directly denying them the K League title on the final day of the season, once in 2013 (when they overtook Ulsan to take the title for themselves) and once in 2019 (when they denied Ulsan the draw they needed).

Kookmin Bank FC

Kookmin Bank were founded in 1969 and found some success initially in amateur and semi-professional competitions. Their brief venture into the K League was an unsuccessful one. Kookmin Bank finished bottom of the table in both 1983 (3 wins from 16 games) and 1984 (3 wins from 28 games), and after that they decided to throw in the towel on participating in "professional" leagues.
After returning to the lower leagues, they again found some success, until the Asian Financial crisis forced their disbandment. That wasn't the end though as they reformed again in 2000.
Their most noteworthy moment this millenium was winning the 2006 National League (the second division at the time), and being invited to return to the K League once more. The invitation was refused. The owners cited a law preventing banks from being involved in profitable ventures outside of banking, but the more likely reason was that they thought supporting a professional team would lead to financial losses. The decision prompted the one-man protest by football columist Kim Hyun-hoe outside Kookmin Bank's headquarters. For their snub they received a 20 point deduction for the 2007 season.
Despite coming runners-up in the National League in 2012, at the end of the season the team was dissolved. For real this time. Many of the assets and players would be transferred to FC Anyang, founded in 2013 and currently playing in K League 2. It's also interesting to note that their home ground in their final season was Goyang Stadium - the same stadium Goyang Hi FC (see Hallelujah, above) would play in when they disbanded in 2016.

2020.07.10 04:05 wyldstylekenobi I need a spiritual mentor

You know how they have free dating sites? They need free spiritual mentor sites! Someplace you can meet people that you connect with, that you can either mentor or be mentored by!
So I figured "let me start with Reddit!"
Working on a hypothetical ad/profile. I will update this when it is done.
In the meanwhile, do any of you know how to find a spiritual mentor?

2020.07.10 03:40 Saraphim663 EVE (fiction)

 EVE

2020.07.10 02:57 loser0001 Remembering the inaugural K League season

2020.07.10 02:02 Edenassraf3 i(F19) found out my boyfriend(M21) has an account to an escort service website

one night a few weeks ago i was sleeping over at my boyfriend’s house and it was around 2am. he was sleeping and i was awake watching netflix because i am a night owl and cannot sleep🤣 i had to go to the restroom but my phone was at 1% and i needed entertainment, so i grabbed his phone to use. i was watching tiktok and videos on the toilet when i decided to look through his search history on safari because i was curious since every time i’m with him, it’s completely cleared. i never snoop around his phone but this time i did because he ALWAYS looks through mine so i thought “what’s the harm?” i found that he made about 25-30 different searches on an escort website where he was looking through women’s profiles and it had their phone numbers, location, etc. at first i was like whatever because maybe he was curious and bored and decided to look through it, but then i saw that he had an account, which really upset me. i also saw that he was google translate looking to translate phrases like these to spanish: “when do you finish work?” “when can i pick you up?” “are you free tonight?” “can we meet up?” etc. i then went to his email to see if the account was registered to him and if was doing any activity on it, and it was registered to him. i screenshotted all of the searches and the email and sent them to myself in case he wanted to be a snake.
i went back into the bedroom and confronted him about it, asking if he knew anything about the site or ever heard of it. he said he never heard of it and went back to sleep. 5 minutes later he got up to go to the bathroom and took his phone with him, spent some time in there, and then came back saying that he actually has heard of it and only because his friend showed him profiles. i asked when the last time he went on the website was and he said 6 months ago. i then took his phone to show him all of the searches he made and it was all deleted, even the confirmation email! so then i pulled up the screenshots of the search history that i took and sent to my phone, which were from less than A WEEK ago. he said that his friend was showing him and he was looking at it from his phone since his friend’s phone was dead. i then asked him why he had an account and he said it was because you needed an account to view the profiles (a lie) and he made one for his friend to look. (it was under his email btw). he then told me that he used the website to get a massage because his back was in a lot of pain and all places were closed due to corona, in which he then said he went to meet up w the lady to get the massage but she wanted sex instead so he left.
i am not sure if i believe him or not because he has never done anything like this EVER and he doesn’t even follow any females on instagram after we started dating (we will be together for 2 years in october 2020). this isn’t the first time he has lied or been “toxic” so i wanted to take this seriously and not brush it over my shoulder. he would do things like take my phone and unfollow all the guys from my account, tell me that if i wore a certain “revealing” outfit he didn’t like or went to a party or concert without him he would break up w me, he lied about going to some places, he punched a hole in a wall one time and got pissed at me because i didn’t do what he said. things like that. i’m not sure what to do and right now we are on break. i love him but i don’t want to ignore toxic signs.

Forgive me for the long post but damn this is alot to deal with. So me (28m) and my ex(30m) were together for six years. I absolutely love him to death but we are so toxic and codependent that we cripple each other in life. So for some background, we met when we were both bartenders and living a very unhealthy lifestyle. At the time drug and alcohol use were out of control for both of us due to trying to not deal with past traumas. We dove headfirst into the relationship, quickly becoming codependent. After a few years of this we decided to pack our things and move across the country to start fresh and remove ourselves from the social circles we had fallen into. We both continued to work as bartenders and eventually he landed an amazing opportunity as a surveyor. Great pay, benefits, and a steady work schedule, or so we thought. Once the company he was working for had a spot open, he was able to get me on as well. For a year we both worked this job pulling in over 14K a month but both worked 6 days a week 9-12 hours a day. Well the grass is always greener for me and of course I choose to quit and go back to school because I was very unhappy with the people who I was working under (homophobic, racist, etc.). He also stopped participating in any household work and would spend all of his free time playing video games. I recently completed my degree and was offered a full ride as a GTA at the same university for a masters. While finishing my degree I became involved in various research projects and devoted much of my spare time to progressing my education and training. In the same week that I accepted this offer, his job informed him that he would be moved for a year to another state. Around the same time I discovered that he had been using web cam sites. He was paying a good deal of money to these sites. I confronted him and he lied and began to gaslight me. We moved forward after many many discussions as to why he felt the need to use these sites. I made it clear that I do not have a problem with the use of the sites but that I had a problem that he was hiding it from me. His claims were that with our mismatched schedule having led to a lack of sex in the relationship that he felt he was using them because he was not receiving enough attention and felt very lonely. Moving forward I did a few things such as trying to have sex at least every other day, bringing "play friends" around, and opening the relationship to allow for FWB. All to help him feel free to express and fulfill his needs in any way he saw fit BUT not feel the need to hide and lie to me about it. Well as time progressed he continued to hide things from me. He began to catfish other men and when I discovered this he lost it. Completely flipped out on me and I had decided to leave him...but I ended up staying because he promised to go to therapy both individually and as a couple when the time came. Well the time comes for him to move for his job and long story short he was laid off immediately after moving. We had spent our savings to move him and get him into a vehicle that would be good for the job. He spent the next few weeks where he was before coming back home. When he arrived we had another long talk about the work I thought we should do as a couple to strengthen our bond after everything. He agreed and the next night stayed up to catfish behind my back. When i confronted him he lied and deleted all the evidence to make it seem as if I was legit crazy. It has now been a few weeks and we are living in the same house across from each other. We live with another couple. He has been in therapy every week since I told him I did not want to be together, as have I. We fucked up and stated to sleep with each other thinking that we could just be FWB due to us being in the same house. Yesterday was my birthday and I asked how he felt about us starting to date and see how things play out. He said that he knows that we will fall back into our same habits if we do. He doesn't want to hurt me again and that he has to much that he needs to take care of for himself and that he can't feel like he has to take care of me. I get this, especially since we both deal with anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation.

To the Advice portion. How do we go about living so closely and wanting to be there for eachother but not? How do we shift to No Contact when we have no choice but to be in contact. Neither of us have family that we can turn to (product of being raised by homophobic parents) nor do we have friends that could take us in. We just signed a lease where we are and do not have the money to do any other arrangement. He has no job but is looking. Things are tight and COVID seems to have no end in sight. My grad program is moving to online and that's not the experience I was looking for. I am unsure of how to get myself into a better position so that I can move on and work on the things that I need to. My therapist even has said to me that she is really at a loss as to help me troubleshoot solutions primarily due there not being anywhere else for us to go but needing to seperate to figure our heads out.

2020.07.09 22:25 Comprehensive-Mode52 Breakup Advice

2020.07.09 20:42 adamv86666 What worked for my major depression/anxiety and severe anhedonia

I found myself majorly depressed/anxious/anhedonic. Continuous stress, panic attacks, not wanting to live anymore, no energy, no motivation. All of the typical signs of major Depression and diagnosed by 3 different counsellors/psychs and doctors. I was determined to do this without antidepressants. However, I was getting extreme physical symptoms from anxiety such as shortness of breath, shaking, numbness, panic etc. I went on 5mg of Propanolol which is a beta-blocker - this worked SO well for the anxiety with no side effects (10% improvement, no physical symptoms from anxiety). I think antidepressants are terrible and do not help you improve they just make you not care about your current situation or depression. I think it's important to upregulate and improve your dopamine and serotonin receptors through the following below. Its a lot of work and a lot of effort, you only get one life - why not try to make the best of it that you can?
Nootropics - I first attempted the Nootropic route in an effort to cure the depression. I spent approx. $3000 at Nootropics Depot, Research chemical sites (BPC, Bromantane etc.) I tried almost every Nootropic to date. None of the nootropics worked, it seemed to almost make it worse since I felt like I was relying on these to feel better. I stopped all the nootropics and stuck with Caffeine, Creatine, Multivitamin, Fish Oil, Vitamin D, Vitamin B50, Tryptophan, 400mcg melatonin, 3g Niacin for the flush. Phenibut worked for my anxiety but left me feeling depressed for the 2 days after the dose (warning: be very careful with phenibut, it is addicting.) . - These had no lasting effect on my depression/anxiety.
Nicotine Gum - this was an interesting nootropic that I did not expect to work as well as it did. I would buy the 4mg nicotine gum and cut them into 4 1mg pieces (to save money). Before studying or working or reading/writing I would take a 1mg dose. I felt energy and calmness at the same time and this improved my focus and mood. I only used the nicotine gum to reinforce a positive activity like to study or work. I noticed an improvement in cognition/mood/focus. I did not develop an addiction. I suggest being very careful with the nicotine gum, but it does provide some benefit.
Psychedelics - 5g psilocybin dose 1x per month, 250mcg LSD dose 1x per month. I tried microdosing both, it seemed to make things worse for me. I needed the macro doses for both. Every trip I had was a bad trip - because I've had a pretty bad life and made a lot of the wrong choices and these substances brought these problems to the forefront. I was hopeful that I could change. Always during the trip, there would be a really bad part that I had to work through, then pure bliss for about an hour with the 2-day afterglow of feeling fairly happy before returning to a depressed baseline. 10% improvement - this helped me to realize and become aware of a lot of things so I feel like this helped me become awoken to the truth. - Very beneficial for many reasons and highly recommend.
THC - I am very sensitive to marijuana or THC. I found that consuming edible marijuana and calculating approx. a 2-5mg edible dose provided a profound effect for my stretching/meditation and pain response. It also made me more motivated/happy and made food taste better as well without incapacitating me. I highly recommend microdosing THC with edibles (not smoking) and find a dose where you can function. This was far superior to microdosing psychedelics for me. 5% improvement - made the exercise/stretching/yoga more enjoyable.
Alcohol - avoid alcohol as much as you can. It is the worst for anxiety/depression and general health. I suggest 1-2 glasses of low sugar red wine per week or if you need to go out and socialize. Drink mindfully and try to feel the change in your perception as you have a drink. This can be good for relaxation in a social environment.
Excercise - I ran 10km per day and built my own routine using 2 40lb kettlebells that I did out in a field with my dog on a yoga matt then ran sprints. It was very difficult to get the motivation to exercise but I forced myself to. Sometimes I couldn't and would lay there. Some days I would end early. Some days it was pure torture. I was not getting the endorphins or positive effects from the fitness that I was used to. This improved me by about 10%. (all exercising was completed with audiobooks or podcasts - I ended up finishing approx. 200 books/podcasts etc during my routines. All content was chosen for mental health or self-development)
Nutrition - I went on a full fish/veggie diet and ate 2 cans of sardines/mackerel/salmon in olive oil per day with cucumbers and celery and cayenne and 1 can of oysters (zinc). I then made a soup with broth and chicken breast and filled it with veggies. I blended Kefir with Blueberries/Blackberries/RAspberries (keto berries), to take a probiotic and antioxidant drink - I would sometimes add chia/flax/cacao or protein.) I did not eat any sugar or carbs and went full Keto. I fasted every day until 5 pm and ate from 5 pm to 9 pm or did OMAD. I had a lot of energy from fasting, but sometimes it gave me anxiety or brainfog. This improved me by about 10% since I was already eating fairly healthy beforehand.
Cold Showers - I then implemented cold showers and ice baths. I was working from home so I had 4 cold showers a day and 1 ice bath every day. During the cold shower and ice bath, i experienced complete relief from the depression and anxiety and had energy similar to a coffee. This effect would last for approx. 1 hour before returning to the baseline depressed/anxious state. Immediate relief and relief for about an hour - also an increase in discipline. 10% improvement.
NoFap & SR - I started with NoFap and then SR. This was a HUGE improvement since I was fapping about 1-2x per day to relieve stress but would become unmotivated and feel guilt afterwards and become depressed and would lose interest in my work and my gf (eventually she broke up with me due to neglecting her) after starting NoFap it ignited a fire within me and I felt my libido return and I went to see her and she said I looked like and acted like a new person and had a new energy about me. This was by far my biggest and noticeable improvement yet. 20% improvement.
Stretching/Foam Rolling/Lacrosse Ball Rolling/ Yin Yoga/Meditation - so I had spent the majority of my life sitting down gaming or working or studying sometimes 18 hours a day then going to sleep. My ENTIRE body was tight and inflexible I was so tight I couldn't bend over to put on my shoes or socks. My hips/back and everything was tight and locked up. When you are tight it releases cortisol into your body and causes stress and depression (look into it). I started an intensive stretching/foam rolling/yoga routine where I did all 3 of these activities for approx. 4 hours per day. I would stretch, then lay on a lacrosse ball for 5 mins on a trigger point and let my mind focus on the point and releasing the muscle. During the stretching and yoga, I would enter a meditative state and would forget about all of my problems/issues/depression etc. This provided complete relief from the depression and anxiety while in the act similar to how the cold showers worked. This was the last critical improvement I needed to beat the anhedonia/depression. 20% improvement.
Clean your area - clean and organize all of your clothes/room etc. You cannot function in a messy living area. Remove all clutter and do not buy anything that you do not need (unless you love it) 2% improvement.
Posture - always keep proper posture when sitting or standing. For some reason, this improved my confidence and made me feel better. I would always sit slouched or bent over and this would make me tired and lethargic and unmotivated. 2% improvement.
Every single one of these activities was a struggle and very difficult to do while majorly depressed, i knew it was my only way out though and I knew I didn't want to do them but I could do them and suffer through it. This has been the first week that the veil of depression has lifted. The dark cloud seems to be gone - things aren't better yet, but I feel like I can move forward now and work harder to improve myself.
All of these activities are free and just require your time (Except the supplements). The Nootropics was by far the biggest waste of money I made in this experience. One of my biggest regrets. I recommend the sardines for a staple nutrition choice try for 2 cans of it per day mixed with cucumbesourcream and celery (it ends up tasting good!) as you can get these for about $1.00 per can in bulk. I am hoping to provide some assistance for people that are struggling with depression and anxiety and provide some alternative tools to their arsenal. This has been the toughest experience of my life, but I feel like I've come out stronger. I know I will struggle with this for the rest of my life as I have from when I was a child. I hope you all get the relief that you need and stay strong - being in the depressed state or anxious and getting up every day and going through the day makes you all heroes in my opinion. Continue on the hero's journey, and don't give up.
I used a task app to track each one of these activities and I would physically need to click completely with the recurring task each day after I completed it. Inside of each task, I would have notes written from various research sites and scientific journals regarding the benefits of each action. I would read these daily for motivation. The act of completing the task activated my reward pathways and gave me a dopamine spike and motivated me to continue on. Somedays I only completed 1 or 2 of the tasks - some days none and stayed in bed all day. Each day is a new day, however, and you can improve. Some days I completed All of the tasks and activities but I considered it a success to even complete 1 of them initially.

2020.07.09 20:38 ARandomGuyWAShotgun Since my last post about an SCP magic set did so well, what should I do to get more SCP articles to make cards of

Feel free to give ideas for cards or articles to make cards of. Just know I'm trying to make the set semi-balanced, so if your idea seems powerful or you choose the article for an eldritch deity, it will have its CMC skyrocketed because I don't like having super unbalanced god cards better than the power 9 in my set. If you give a description of what card effect you want for a specific article, know that I will not replicate it to a T for the following reasons: I'm not going to use a bunch of random keywords from older sets in single cards, I only have so much space for card text, your syntax is wrong or out of date, it uses two cards that need each other to work, your effect just can't be feasibly balanced, or a slightly different effect is a little more flavorful. If I do run polls or something then I will have links to some kind of hub site as to not flood this subreddit.
